Oktoberfest originally started as a celebration of the marriage of Ludwig Crown Prince of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The celebration started on October 12, 1810 and ended on the 17th with a horse race. The event was so successful that they repeated it the next year and added an Agricultural Show, which is still held every three years today. The beer tents were not initially part of the festivities but were later added in 1896. Eventually the start date was moved to the end of September so participants could enjoy the warmer weather.
