The Oregon Treaty of 1846 resolved the conflict between the US and Britain over Oregon. The treaty established the border between the US and British territory at the 49th parallel, allowing for joint occupancy of the Oregon Country for 10 years until the US gained sole control.

Ultimately, the dispute was peacefully resolved with the Oregon Treaty of 1846, which established the boundary along the 49th parallel.
Great Britain and the United States both wanted the northwest area that is now Oregon and Washington state. President Polk told Great Britain "54'40" or Fight." There was no fight, there was a compromise.
