Antarctica was 'expected' by the Greeks, who developed a theory that there was another polar region in the Southern Hemisphere. In the 1700s, Captain Cook sailed close enough to drag buckets across the benthos and bring up continental rocks. The rocks had been dropped by melting icebergs. This work began the search for proof of a continent in the south polar region.
