Gold was found in very limited amounts by prospectors passing through Colorado on their way to the California gold fields. The first strike was at Little Dry Creek in present day Confluence Park in Denver, Colorado by Wlliam Greenberryin July of 1858. Gold was found in Boulder, Blackhawk, Cripple Creek and Victor and the Great Pikes Peak or Bust Gold Rush began.

Gold production continues today using open pit mining procedures at Victor and the Molly Kathleen Mine at Cripple Creek is still a functional mine although it is more of a tourist site then a working mine.
