Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister on March 17, 1969, after serving as Minister

of Labor and Foreign Minister. She was Israel's first, and the world's third, woman

to hold such an office. Former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion used to call Meir

"the best man in the government".

Her party won the elections in December 1973, but she resigned on April 11, 1974,

and was succeeded by Yitzhak Rabin on June 3, 1974.
