Like all such buildings, it was constructed over a very long time. As early as the 9th century there are references to the Qal' at al Hambra on the site. That fortress was allowed to fall into ruin until it was restored and renovated in the 11 th century. The replacement also was abandoned. The current, 3rd version, complex of fortress and palaces was built between 1238 and 1527. The complex begun 1238 was also allowed to deteriorate until it was "rediscovered" by European and American intellectuals in the early 19th century. It was given the status of "National Monument", funds were provided, and restoration was begun again that lasts until this day.
