Not Grin: GIN (short for engine). Invented by Eli Whitney, who happened to be staying on a friend's plantation and thought that picking cotton was an awful lot of work and a machine ought to be able to do it quicker than slaves. Whitney patented the gin on patented the cotton gin on March 14 1794. The opatent office only granted him a ten-year monopoly, and anyway the machine was so simple that it had already been copied throughout the South, and Whitney did not make his fortune. On the other hand, he created a cotton boom, supplied the world with cheap clothing, and incidentally contributed towards the abolition of slavery - one gin could pick as much cotton as 300 slaves.
