Yes, California did use the electric chair as a method of execution. It was introduced in 1890 and remained in use until 1972 when the California Supreme Court ruled the death penalty unconstitutional, leading to a moratorium on executions. Although the electric chair was officially abolished in 2006, lethal injection became the primary method of execution in the state.
I believe the trial lasted 9 months, which at the time was the longest trial in California state history.

Yes. The California state animal is the California grizzly bear. Unfortunately, the last California grizzly was shot in 1922. There are, however, plans afoot to reintroduce the grizzly back into some of its former ranges - including the Golden State. As a related bit of information, there is a bit of debate over whether the California grizzly was "different" enough to be a subspecies of the grizzly.
