The southern magnolia (magnolia grandiflora) became the official state flower of Mississippi in 1952. Additionally, Mississippi's official nickname is The Magnolia State. It is interesting to note that the first election to slect an unofficial state flower was in 1900. The election took place as a school project with 23,278 school children casting votes, including 12,745 votes for the magnolia.
