In Matthew's Gospel, Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus fled from Bethlehem in Judea to Egypt for fear of King Herod, who sought to have Jesus killed. They began the return journey to their home in Bethlehem after the death of Herod but, being warned in a dream, turned aside and travelled to a city called Nazareth, in Galilee. This return journey would have taken place sometime between 4 BCE and 6 CE - after the death of Herod and before the Romans deposed his son and successor, Archelaus.
In Luke's Gospel, there was no flight to Egypt. It seems that the family never returned to Bethlehem, but did travel each year from Nazareth to Jerusalem in Judea, for the Passover.
