Where did boardwalk get its name?

Alexander Boardman in 1870 proposed the idea of a planked walkway to cut down on the amount of sand being tracked into hotels and other businesses to establishment owners in Atlantic City. The idea took and originally was known as "Boardman's Walk" but later shortened to just "boardwalk".
