The major population was in Northern California. San Francisco grew and as the miners followed the Sacramento River to the gold fields small towns were created. The majority of these places still exist and have people living there. Sacamento grew from a fort to a major city. John Sutter the owner of the fort and the saw mill where gold was found lost everything due to the gold rush.
