The first settlers in New York were Dutch and they called it New Netherlands. The English thought of the Dutch as intruders. In 1664 Charles II had granted the area to his brother the Duke of York and a large squadron of English ships appeared off of the poor defenses of New Amsterdam. The Dutch were forced to surrender without a fight to the Duke without firing a shot. New Amsterdam was named in honor of the Duke of York and England won a wonderful harbor, a area that was located in the middle of the mainland colonies and had the Hudson River to use for penetrating the interior This gave the English a solid stretch of territory from Maine to the Carolina's .
