Where do the poor people live in Mexico?

The rural poor live on remote communities where agriculture is poor at best; some of these include villages along the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. Some examples include Coicoyan de las Flores on the southern state of Oaxaca along the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range, or Batopilas, on the northern state of Chihuahua along the Sierra Madre Occidental.

The urban poor live on slums commonly found around most important cities, inhabiting shacks of corrugated sheets or cardboard. Most of them are first-generation immigrants from rural to urban areas, with little to no education.

Mexico is a land of great contrasts, having regions with a quality of live comparable to Norway, as opposed to regions with income, education and life expectancy equivalent to that of Haiti or Somalia. As such, Mexican housing widely varies upon two things: climate and cost. Unlike their American counterparts, who most often than not would end up as homeless, the pauper usually live on small cardboard shacks, in irregular settlements known as ciudades perdidas (Spanish for lost cities). For low class housing -- which would qualify as poor in most Western countries -- you could find humble palm shacks along the coast, adobe houses on desert climates or wood cabins in more temperate climates; large prefab housing projects and single-family dwellings made of filler block are also common in major cities.
