The Autism Research Institute (ARI) was created in 1967 by Dr. Bernard Rimland, a psychologist and researcher who revolutionized the understanding and treatment of autism. ARI was established to conduct research on the causes of autism and to develop effective therapies for individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Over the years, ARI has been instrumental in advancing knowledge about autism and providing support for individuals and families affected by the condition.
Autism in a neurological disorder. Scientific research seems to indicate a strong hereditary factor in autism. No research has concluded that computers contribute to or cause autism.
National Alliance for Autism Research was created in 1994.
Children with autism are usually supported by a team of doctors and specialists, depending on their needs. The main doctors involved include Developmental Pediatrician: Specializes in developmental and behavioral conditions and often leads the diagnosis and care plan for autism. Pediatric Neurologist: Helps when autism is linked with neurological issues like seizures or motor difficulties. Child Psychiatrist: Manages emotional, behavioral, or co-existing mental health conditions such as anxiety or ADHD. General Pediatrician: Monitors overall health, growth, and coordinates referrals to specialists. In addition, doctors work closely with speech therapists, occupational therapists, behavioral therapists, and psychologists to support the child’s communication, learning, and daily skills.
In years of reading research on autism, I have not encountered the term "applied autism", but the two words could appear together, such as "applied autism teaching techniques".
The study of autism is often referred to as "autism research" or "autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research." This interdisciplinary field encompasses various aspects, including genetics, neuroscience, psychology, and education, to better understand the causes, characteristics, and interventions for autism. Researchers aim to improve diagnosis, treatment, and support for individuals on the autism spectrum.
