The Ural mountains are a theoretical boundary only. They are not on a plate boundary. They have traditionally marked the border between Europe and Asia, but this is an historical and notional boundary, from before our ideas of continents were based on tectonic plates. To the North we had pretty much the current boundaries. To the West, as a result of the Louisiana purchase, the boundary was all lands drained by the Mississippi River and this boundary was quite inexact. Jackson believed that Texas was included. This area would include part of California. The North part of California and the Oregon territory were still very muchunder dispute with Britain, Russia and Mexico, in the case of California. Nobody question the Atlantic as the eastern boundary.
