The main athletic rival of the United States Air Force Academy is The United States Military Academy, also known as West Point, or simply Army. This is due to the closely intertwined histories of the two branches of the military in which the Air Force separated from the Army to become an independent branch of the military in 1947. The Air Force continued to be supplied with officers from West Point until The Air Force Academy graduated its first class in 1959. Another close rival is the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD.
