Exploration of course continued, but Juan de Onate came to settle the area, to convert the Native Americans to Christianity and to exploit the area for its riches. He established his Capital City as present day Santa Fe by 1608.

The first explorer to discover New Mexico was Spanish Conquistador Francisco Vazquez de Coronado.
Credit is given to Francisco de Ibarra, an explorer and prospector for first using that name is 1563 and it became official when Juan de Onate was appointed the first governor of the Province of New Mexico in 1598.
The first post-explorer settlement in what is now New York was established by the Dutch in 1624. They founded New Amsterdam on the southern tip of Manhattan Island, which served as a trading post for the Dutch West India Company. The settlement was primarily driven by economic interests, particularly in fur trade. In 1664, the English seized control of the area, renaming it New York.
