Leif Erickson. He established a settlement on Newfoundland. He was born about 970 - 980, most likely on Iceland. Leif discovered North America either when he was blown off course on his way to introduce Christianity to Greenland, or he found it after hearing about it from another Greenlander who had been blown off course and had seen land to the west, and went looking for it.
His father, Eric the Red, established the first settlements on Greenland.

Many historians believe that Norse explorer Leif Erikson was the first European to reach North America, arriving around the year 1000 AD, well before Christopher Columbus's voyage in 1492. Erikson is credited with establishing a settlement called Vinland, likely located in present-day Newfoundland, Canada. His exploration predates Columbus by nearly 500 years, highlighting the early presence of Europeans in the New World.
The first European explorer widely credited with reaching America is Christopher Columbus, who arrived in the Bahamas in 1492. However, Norse explorer Leif Erikson is believed to have reached parts of North America, specifically present-day Newfoundland, Canada, around the year 1000 AD, well before Columbus. While Columbus's voyages are often highlighted due to their significant impact on European exploration and colonization, Erikson's earlier journey marks the first known European contact with North America.
