Sir Francis Drake was known as the pirate El Draque to the Spaniards because of his constant looting of their ships. He landed on the coast of California on June 17, 1579.
Columbus didn't explore for any country, but was hired by Spain after years of searching for a country to hire him, and pay for his ships.
