From any place on earth, whenever the sun rises, whether or not it's visible, it

rises from somewhere on the eastern half of the horizon, and whenever it sets,

it sets into somewhere on the western half of the horizon.

That goes also for places in the polar regions ... more poleward than the Arctic and

Antarctic Circles. These are the regions where at least once a year, there is no

sunrise for at least 24 hours, and no sunset during a different 24 hours. In those

regions as well, when the sun does rise, it rises from the eastern horizon, and

when it sets, it sets at the western horizon.
