Greek art underwent an Orientalising period in which it was influenced by the art of Anatolia, Assyria, Phoenicia and Egypt. This was linked to the Assyrians and Egyptians becoming more active in trade in the eastern Mediterranean, the Phoenicians settling in Cyprus, and the Greeks establishing trading colonies in Syria. Closer contact and increased trade led the Greeks to absorb artistic themes from the Middle East. Alexander the Great's conquest of the Middle East and Egypt led to the Hellenistic period. The conquered people absorbed Greek culture and customs, and Greece was further influenced by the Middle East. When the Romans became influenced by the Greeks, they absorbed this cultural blend. They were also further influenced through their conquest of much of the Middle East.
