One result of the war on the Balkan peninsula was the creation of new independent states such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia.
It looks like there are several countries that can apply to throughout history, including at least the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia.
