South Korea has a considerably larger military force, due to conscription, which, in turn, is due to the imminent threat to the north. Japan has a smaller - but argually more professional - military, and is restricted in how it can be formed, what size it can be, and other aspects in accordance with the treaty which was signed to officially end the Second World War.
