It has been said that the original maroons of Jamaica were spanish maroons who came with the spanish who discovered Jamaica in the 15th century. then around the 1700's more maroons flourished amongst the African slaves that were brought from ( gold cost) Ghana in west Africa. African slaves rebelled and ran to the hills, and this was the name given to them from the spanish which meant " wild, runaway"
The Mocho Moroons originated in central Jamaica based in the Mocho Mountians, now have spread out through Clarendon, especially in the south, to surrounding parishes. Many are unaware of their Maroon ancestry.
Maroons settled in the mountains for safety and protection from European colonizers and slave catchers. The rugged terrain made it difficult for their pursuers to track them, allowing them to establish autonomous communities away from plantations. Additionally, the mountains provided natural resources for survival and defense.
