The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, was constructed in the late 16th century. The foundation was laid in 1581 by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, and the main structure was completed in 1604 under the patronage of Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru.
