Judah was promised he would become as powerful as a lion and rule over others. The Messiah, the one promised to deliver all the people from sin would come from Judah's family.
He wanted to enjoy his son's food so that the blessing would be a heartfelt one. This is also why he kissed his son before blessing him (Genesis ch.27).
In biblical tradition, the firstborn son often received specific blessings and privileges, including a double portion of the inheritance, which signified his leadership role in the family. This practice, known as the "birthright," meant that the firstborn was seen as the spiritual and material successor to the father's position. Additionally, the firstborn was typically granted a special blessing during a ceremonial event, reinforcing his status within the family and community. These blessings underscored the importance of the firstborn in familial and cultural contexts.
Saul was the son of Kish, he was Israels first king, but he began his reign well but then fell away from god.
Quite the opposite. Ephraim received the 'birthright' blessing for the House of Israel - a great company or commonweath of nations. His brother Manasseh was informed that he to would become a singularly great nation. All the material blessings of the Earth would be theirs as too control of the sea gates of the world's oceans. In history, only two groups of people have received this blessing.
