Texas may be right but I don't think you can discount the states of North Carolina, South Carolina & Virginia. I know NC has over 200 by itself today & you have to consider that the heart of the South during antebellum times was the Carolina's. Texas only became a state in 1835 while NC, SC & Virginia were 3 of the original 13 colonies & much more populated and established than Texas at this time. You also cannot discount TN & Mississippi either and I would put both of these states ahead of Texas as well in terms of # of plantations.
