Crete was nearly destroyed during the Minoan Civilization by a catastrophic volcanic eruption on the nearby island of Santorini (Thera) around 1600 BCE. This eruption caused massive tsunamis and widespread devastation, significantly impacting the Minoan society. Additionally, the subsequent decline of the Minoan civilization may have been exacerbated by invasions from Mycenaean Greeks, further threatening Crete's stability.

The Minoan Civilization was earlier, identified particularly with Knossos on Crete, and was probably destroyed by the volcanic eruption and tsunami that destroyed what is now Santorini island. The Mycenaean civilization is identified with Mycenae and is the civilization that was created by the survivors of the Minoan Civilization when their cultural center was destroyed.
There are a number of islands just northeast of Crete, including Dragonada, Karpathos, Kos and Rhodes.
Current belief is that the Minoan civilization was destroyed as a result of an explosive eruption of Mt Thera (or Santorini) which resulted in a pyroclastic flow which blanketed the island of Santorini and caused a tsunami which overwhelmed Crete.
