Pittsburgh was once home to the largest collection of steel mills and foundaries in the US. There where mills stretching east almost to Johnstown, east to Weirton and Wheeling, WV and north to Beaver Falls. Pittsburgh was called Steeltown USA by those in the area. The Steelers used to be called the Pittsburgh Pirates. But then, since Pittsburgh has so many Steel Factories, and Pittsburgh is known for making steel. The steel factory decided to sponsor the Pittsburgh team if they would change there name to the Steelers. There logo, or symbol is also the symbol for the Pittsburgh Steel Factories.
A Steeler was someone who worked in the steel mills. Pittsburgh is famous for their steel production and terrible sports teams (Pittsburgh Power- AFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Pirates.) They also are robbers which is weird because they can never "steel" a win. They lose to the Ravens every year.
the EPA put too strict a rules on the steel mills and they couldn't afford to modernize the mills so they went out of business all across this country.
Because steel was the most important industry there.

A contest was held by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 1940 to rename the team and Steelers was chosen. This may have had a lot to do with the large steel industry located in Pittsburgh and its surrounding area. Yes, the choice of the Steelers name is related to the steel industry. In fact the Steelers logo is actually the Steel Logo created in 1959 to help identify products made of steel. The three star like shapes represent the raw materials used to make steel. Those materials include iron ore, coal, and limestone. See Web Links for an image of the "Steel Trademark" See Web Links for more information on Pittsburgh and the steel industry
