Mali began a slow decline in 1337 after their last strong king, Mansa Musa, died. The Berbers conquered Timbuktu, but in 1468 Sunni Ali, the leader of Songhai, drove the Berbers out of Timbuktu.

After Mansa Musa died, his son Maghan took the throne. Maghan was a weak ruler. Raiders from the southeast poured into Mali. Mali never fully recovered from the attack. The Malian Empire continued to weaken and decline after.This soon lead to the uprise of the new empire Songhai,which would be the new and powerful empire after Mali had fallen.

Mali conquerred Ghana in the early 1200's after the North African Muslims had controlled Ghana briefly in 1076. Ghana had allready begun it's decline.

Ansar ad-Dine, the Islamist Paramilitary Group that conquered northeast Mali, planned to institute an incredibly barbaric form of Islamic Law. They beheaded people and cut people's limbs off. They also destroyed historical buildings in Timbuktu and Goa that they believed were heretical (even though they were built by Muslims).
As with many other kingdoms and empires of the path, the governing of a large area became too difficult. It was too expensive to continue to rule the areas at the edge of the empire. As time went on, the area grew smaller and faller and eventually faded away.

The nation expanded through West Africa from the 8th century until 1078 when it was conquered by the Almoravids. The Mali empire was later formed and reached the height of power by the 14th Century. This empire collapsed after the invasion of the Morrocan's in 1591
