The Italian Sea Captain in the service of France who explored the Coast of North America from what is today the Carolinas and Nova Scotia was Giovannida Verrazano. He set sail in 1524 to search for a northwest passage to Asia.

Giovanni da Verrazano was the European navigator who was the first to explore North America. He explored the coasts of The Carolinas and Newfoundland. He observed the mouth of the Delaware River and the entrance to the Hudson River, he reached the coast of what today is Maine and the southeastern part of Nova Scotia. In his last travel he explored Florida and The Bahamas.
The Vikings mostly explored Labrador, Newfoundland and around the Canadian Maritime Provinces.
