Designed by Indigenous Elder Harold Thomas in 1971, this flag symbolises Aboriginal identity. Yellow represents the sun (giver of life) and yellow ochre. Red represents the red earth (the relationship to the land) and the red ochre used in ceremonies. Black represents the Aboriginal people.

The current Australian flag was design in 1900 for a British overseas possession and for that purpose it was perfectly valid . But today Australia is a completely separate country in its own right ( see Australia Acts 1986 ) . The flag should indicate our current status - not what we once were .

On June 14th 1777, the Maritime Committee of the Continental Congress Congress passed the first "Flag Resolution" describing our first flag with 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 stars on a blue union. The design of this flag is attributed to Francis Hopkinson shortly thereafter.

A Canadian member of the Ballarat Reform League, Captain Henry Ross, designed the Eureka flag. Ross was inspired by the design of the Australian Federation Flag. Three local women, Anastasia Withers, Anne Duke, and Anastasia Hayes, sewed the original flag.
According to Congress a man name Francis Hopkinson made the first flag in 1776 for the navy. He chose the colors from the British Union Jack and added white stripes to it. Later, the stars replaced the cross on the British flag.
