Queens borough was founded as part of the consolidation of New York City in 1898. It was originally settled by the Dutch in the 17th century and was named after Queen Catherine of Braganza, the wife of King Charles II of England. The area evolved over the years, incorporating various towns and communities, ultimately becoming one of the five boroughs of New York City.
Queens Borough Hall was created in 1940.
