Numerous Dutch explorers, as well as English explorer Wiliam Dampier, landed at Shark Bay from about 1616 (Dirk Hartog) onwards. Even the French made a claim to the territory, but the area was formally founded after it was charted by Captain H M Denham in 1858. Denham carved his name and the date on the cliff face at Eagle Bluff, and the town of Denham received its name from the Captain.
