After World War I, both France and Spain maintained their protectorates in Morocco. However, Abd el-Krim led a Berber uprising from 1921 to 1926 that resulted in the establish of the Republic of the Rif. This rebellion was eventually suppressed by the French and Spanish. By 1943, the independence party Istiqlal had been established to push for national independence. By 1956, Morocco had regained its independence from both France and Spain; by 1957, Sultan Mohammed V was proclaimed king of Morocco.
