Oops, I forgot to answer the second part. When Pandora opened the jar all of the evils that plague the world flew out - disease, pestilance, hate, etc. -- all the bad things that people had never before experienced. She quickly closed the lid but it was too late. All the bad things we know today flew out into the world. All that was left in the bottom of the jar was a tiny bug -- hope. Which was released to combat the evils.
