Dr. Shivji is a researcher at the Guy Harvey Institute of Nova Southeastern University in southern Florida. Much of his work has been devoted to the development of genetic analyses to detect and identify shark "parts" in catches by commercial fisheries.

Because sharks are slow to reproduce and have small litter sizes compared to most fish, there are limits on how many sharks may be caught intentionally or as bycatch by fishing gear. Dr. Shivji's methods allow a means agencies to identify shark parts collected from fish processing locations and identify them by genetic means, thus quantifying how many of each species are being taken.
