Gene Friend -- longtime public servantJune 28, 2005|By Michael Taylor, Chronicle Staff Writer

Services will be held in San Francisco this afternoon for Eugene L. Friend, an influential haberdasher and real estate entrepreneur who served on city commissions for nearly a quarter of a century and was a member of many Bay Area boards. Mr. Friend died Sunday at his home in San Francisco at the age of 88.

Gene Friend, as he was known around town, was the last of what Sen. Dianne Feinstein, once a mayor of San Francisco, called a "trinity that existed all during those years." It consisted of the late Morris "Mo" Bernstein, who served as president of the San Francisco Airports Commission; the late Henry Berman, a liquor distributor who headed the Fire Commission and the Airports Commission; and Mr. Friend, who served on the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission for 24 years, 13 of them as president.
