Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali, the half-brother of Imam Hussain, was killed during the Battle of Karbala on October 10, 680 CE. He fought valiantly to bring water to the thirsty children of Hussain's camp but was ultimately surrounded and attacked by enemy forces. Though specific individuals are often blamed for his death, it is generally acknowledged that he was killed by the forces of Umar ibn Sa'ad, who led the opposition against Hussain. Abbas's martyrdom is mourned by millions, particularly during the month of Muharram.
