This name is found on the New Netherland map of 1639 by Johannes Vingboon. Although the names for the island in English and Dutch were similar at this time - both meaning Rabbit Island (Conyne Eylandt; Konijneneiland in modern Dutch spelling and Coney Island is the English adaptation of the Dutch name. It appears the the Dutch immigrants were the first to name the island - well before the Island became a tourist area after the Civil War.
