King David captured Jerusalem after ruling for 7 years in Hebron and made Jerusalem his capital. He ruled there for 33 years. Since then it has always been the "capital" although it was destroyed by the Babylonians at the end of the Firts Temple and again by the Romans at the end of the Second Temple.
