The swim from Furlong Island to San Francisco was famously completed by the swimmer and environmentalist Diana Nyad in 2013. At the age of 64, she became the first person to swim this challenging route without a shark cage, covering approximately 110 miles in about 53 hours. Nyad's remarkable achievement highlighted her determination and resilience, as she had previously attempted the swim several times over the years.
