Who owns Japan?

In terms of colonization, it was never formally colonized like North and South America. It was however given strong "Western" influences with the arrival of Commodore Perry in the 18th Century which led to their increased attempts at modernization. So I guess Japan took over Japan.

The Emperor (or "Tenno") was the spiritual leader of Japan, and technically the secular ruler as well. He was sort of like the Pope (who rules Vatican City and is also the spiritual leader of the Church).

However, starting in the 1100's, the real ruler of Japan was known as a "shogun". A shogun was originally just the highest ranking general in the Japanese military, but very quickly became the ruling, all-powerful dictator. Japan in the feudal era was split up between large families called clans; the lord (daimyo) of the most powerful clan would take the title of shogun, and his clan would rule until another clan became powerful enough to overthrow them.

The last time a clan was able to overthrow a shogun was in the late 1500's when the ruling Ashikaga clan became very weak and several clans fought a major civil war to claim the shogunate from them. To shorten a long and interesting story, eventually the daimyo of the Oda clan won the war; but their leaders died before they could set up a new shogunate. The Oda clan's allies, the Tokugawa clan, were able to step in and establish their own shogunate.

The Tokugawa clan ruled as shoguns until the 1860's, when the Emperor Meiji was able to overthrow the shogunate, win a short civil war, and then make the emperor the real ruler of Japan again.
