Fish and chips is a meal. It's fried fish with French fries on the side.

During World War 2 Fish and Chip shops were not subject to rationing and a Fish and Chip supper was a popular supplementary meal, both with the British population and the overseas military based in the UK. Fish and chips shops open until late in the evening so for shift workers and off base miltary personell it was one of the only readily available hot meals.

Note: Fish and chips is still reputed to be the most popular convenience food item in Britain and is still popular as a late evening supper after a night out.

Fish and chips is still a popular friday evening meal in English households, even though the practice of only eating fish on fridays died out centuries earlier.

The convienence of buying fast food on a friday can make an easier start to the weekend for buzy mothers.
