He had a sister, Sarah who was 2 years older, and a brother, Thomas, "Tommy", who was 2 years younger. Tommy died as an infant, and Abraham and Sarah spent their early childhood, together.

In October of 1818, when Abraham was 9, and Sarah was 11 years old, their mother Nancy, passed away from "milk sickness".

Their father, Thomas, remarried in December of 1819 to Sarah Bush Johnston, who was a widow, and had 3 of her own children. For the next several years, Abraham lived with his sister Sarah, his father Thomas, step mother Sarah, and his 2 step sisters, Elizabeth age 13 and Matilda age 10, and his step brother, John D age 9.

In 1826, Sarah married Aaron Grigsby. She unfortunately died, (her baby boy was stillborn) during labor, in January of 1828.

In 1830, the Lincolns sold their farm in Indiana, and moved to Macon County, Illinois. The following year, Abraham moved out on his own, to Coles County, Illinois.
