Catholic AnswerAlthough we cannot know for sure, it would appear that Elizabeth's mother, Gertrude was an extremely pious and holy woman, who died when Elizabeth was four years old, when she was betrothed. She was already know as a pious and holy child. It would appear that after that time, we was raised by her future mother-in-law, Sophia, also a very holy woman. In the final analysis, though, it is always God who is the inspiration of all the saints. They are saints because they learn to listen to Him, and to respond with their whole hearts, as St. Benedict said, "to prefer nothing to the work of God."
