Wu Zetian is the only woman emperor of China. Born into a rich and aristocratic family, she was taught to read and write. She became the concubine of the Second Emperor of the Tang Dynasty and she later became the Empress of the Third Emperor of the said dynasty. After the third emperor died Wu Zetian reigned in the name of her two sons. In 609, she desposed her sons, proclaimed herself Emperor of Zhou and took over the throne.
