Doxy begger carries on her back a great pack in which she has all the things she is has stolen. As she walks she knits , and wears a needle in her hat . If any chicken are near she feeds them with bread,and has a a thread tied to a hook baited. The chicken swallow this, is choked and is then hidden under Cloak

The Doxy beggar was a beggar in Tudor times; she was one of the most devious beggars.

She would carry a rather large bag on her back, and at the same time she would be knitting and make it look like what she was knitting was going into her bag, but what she was really doing was walking around and picking up anything that would be worth money, putting it into her bag and running off with it.

One of her most famous tricks, was to put a piece of bread onto the end of a hook and line. The chicken would eat this, she would pull the line and the chicken would be killed instantly, giving the doxy a lovely meal!

Once her bag was full she would go and sell the items, the same as all beggars. The doxy wasn't always poor; sometimes they would just do it so that she had some more money.

The Doxy beggar was always a woman.
