The first archbishop of Philadelphia was John Francis Regis McElroy. He was appointed to the position in 1875 when the diocese was elevated to an archdiocese. McElroy played a significant role in expanding the Catholic Church in the region and established various institutions to serve the growing population. He served as archbishop until his death in 1886.
